The reason I went to look it up is because in all these years of listening to it (and knowing it by heart) I never actually “heard” the emphasis on FOUR and NINE and when you wrote it up that way, I just *had* to go listen again. I always heard it as a pause after, but not an emphasis on those numbers… in fact, I would have said the emphasis was on the FIVE and TEN if you’d asked.

I made Chris listen to it, and when asked, he hears the emphasis where you do.

That Chris is a good man.

Ernie and Cookie Monster are the best Sesame Street characters ever — that Bert is such a dork.

Noah and I just watched a bunch of the clips. I gave him the option to choose whichever character he wanted to watch — he only wanted to watch clips with Ernie and Cookie Monster… what a good kid!
On a side note, I think ‘Ernie breaks the cookie jar’ has to be about my all-time favorite… it is just classic Ernie.

After an exhaustive search — — I found one clip of The Count counting apples with some Cookie Monster hijinx.

As far as requests go, I would LOVE to see the bit where Bert goes on a trip, and so the Count comes over to keep Ernie company. The Count begins to count sheep, and in the end Ernie comes out looking rather wild - one of the few times that Ernie ends up on the short end of the stick.

Oh man, great entry. Those martians with the telephone? The ones that go “Yip yip yip, uh-huh uh-huh”? Simultaneously fascinating and disturbing to my young self. Still kind of are.

The “Yip Yip” Martians scene with the telephone has lived in my memory for so many years. I never thought I would see it again, but having seen it, it’s even better than I remember. Wow. Priceless.

Ok, this is truly awesome!!! Just one missing that I’m DYING to see again: Ernie singing “I Don’t Want To Live On The Moon”!!!! I’m a 26 y/o guy, and when I think about that song, I still get kinda misty eyed! My seven year old loves it now, and we have it on cd, but I’d LOVE to show her the video if anyone can find it! Oh, the memories!! I was watching Family Guy the other night, and they did a take-off on the pinball numbers song that absolutely killed me. I love it!

If anyone can find the “Gimme Five” song, where all the Sesame Street men, in tuxes, do their best Temptations impression singing about the number five. It’s bilingual!

I have to agree with Andy that the “Loaf of bread” cartoon was great! When I was a kid, I thought he was saying “A potato and milk” instead of a CONTAINER of milk. My sisters and I still joke about that.

Say, does any one remember Ernie singing “Everybody Wash”? I don’t remember seeing it on the show, but we had the song on a Sesame Street album (vinyl, of course).

There is a version of Ernie & Shawn Colvin singing “I don’t want to live on the moon” on the Elmopalooza video. Despite your feelings about the red guy, it’s not a bad video. After all, Jon Stewart hosts! Lots of guest artists. Chris Rock even has a bit. Praire Dawn (could be wrong on the name - not enough caffeine yet today) also is in the show. To my mind, she’s old school like Roosevelt Franklin.

I’ve been trying to find a clip of the “Milk” song. the only word in the song is “milk”, sung over and over again, while a baby cries for her bottle, as a milk truck driver is frantically trying to get to the house in time to quiet the screaming baby. drama at it’s finest, a true classic!!

Another request, what about the version of “Stop hey what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down” as a song teaching you to look both ways before crossing the street?

You have no idea how long I have waited to see such a list. These are all really good. I am missing a few favorites though. “Lower Case n standing on a hill”, the “D Song” with the dolls and dragons, the “O Song (o-o-o-o)”, “G-Grover, G-George”, “Everybody Sleeps”, and “Muppet News flash with the Three Pigs”. I could go on and on. I have a 9 year old and we will be taking a trip through time over the weekends until we have seen them all. I have the Muppets at home. Awesome! Awesome! Bring back many fond memories of when I was a lad. And now that I am a dad myself, I love them all (old and new) all over again. But how can you not have the Goo-Goo Dolls with Elmo singing “Pride” (to the tune of Slide). I know Elmo rubs many people the wrong way and I can understand that- but he has his high points too.

wow what great and i really bad memory. I loved the show sesame street as a kid. I still have soem music (including for fans of rosevelt franklin) from sesame street as a kid. I’m putting soem music on my i pod so if anybody is interested i might be able to send soem music over to whomever is interested. the only bad thing about this site iss that fact that sammy the snake is on it.as a child i had mightmares about that Sssstupid,s sssilly ssssserphant. evn after ssseing that clip again issstill get nightaressss.
my personal favorite is the casey mcphee clip i still get cockles in my tummy seeing cookie monster eating that avalance. and that number three clip is great it was one of my favorites. and with almost forty years later sesame street is still going strong. may this show continue to live for at least one more generation of children Jim henson would want it that way.

Im writing a paper on the family and kinship and am using Sesame Street as an example of a show that promoted community in the 1970s.
I used to be a huge fan of the show as a child but now live in countries where it isnt broadcast anymore.
Your insight would be very helpful in terms of how the show has changed and if it still gives great importance to the whole family beyond blood ties (like in “Follow that Bird” Maria gives a speech in the end about how it doesnt matter if youre a grouch or a bird etc they all support each other on the street and they are ultimately his “real” family).

Great site:) I am a nanny, and I watch a lot of sesame street videos, but you just can’t beat the originals. They are too great.

When my daughter was about two or three she had a “friend” named Harry who only called her on the phone. Pretty much every time she saw a phone she would pretend it was ringing and pick it up and say “Oh, HellOOOH Harry!”

It was several months before I discovered that she had seen the awesome Sesame Street cartoon where the lady’s about to feed her cat when the phone rings and she picks it up and says “Oh, HellOOOH Harriet!”.

I would be very grateful to anyone who has that cartoon!

I would also love to see the clip with the orange with the rubber band mouth singing Carmen. Another one I remember, and this is about 30 years ago, so pardon my fuzzy memory, is a stop-motion clip of lots of beans (like pinto beans) marching. That one was very strange, and didn’t have much dialogue, other than the sounds of the beans marching along in formation.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The number song has been stuck in my head for at least 25 years. I seem to remember one skit where the little Muppet guy was singing about finding the exit sign but it was there all along. Can you try to track that one down? I, still to this day, laugh out loud thinking about the exit guy.

What happened to the Number Two Dollhouse video you have linked?? That was my all time favorite as I had those same dolls when I was little….I STILL have those dolls as a matter of fact. This site is awesome…the only drawback is there just aren’t enough clips to satisfy my trip down memory lane. Sesame Street is the best kids programming ever produced…EVER!! For my third birthday my father built a dollhouse that looked like the house where we lived—a 300-year-old farmhouse. I loved that gift because my father made it himself. It was cool having a house for our dolls that so closely resembled our own house. My sister Lisa and I played with our favorite dolls in that dollhouse. My father made a film for Sesame Street featuring the dollhouse and the number 2. The film included two little girls, two little dolls, and two little cats in a little dollhouse.
So Jim Henson built that little doll house too. What an amazing man.

(P.S. found this site at work today when - wait for it - I was abusing company internet facilities! In Australia we too miss and love the “Real” Sesame Street. The humour, the cheerful (sometimes depressing - think Lower Case N) ditties. Classic stuff. My poor kids don’t have any concept of how much laughter this show contained.

One thing I’ve been hoping to find for a while is the Bert and Ernie sketch where the TV is broken and only shows the letter H, which they discover is because it’s all crammed with a bunch of things that start with H.

The TV just sits there making this rising and falling hum, with the letter H fading in and out, and this monotone, creepy voice just keeps repeating, “H…. H…. H….” Freaked me the heck out when I was five.

Also, I’ve been looking for two pieces of incidental music from Sesame Street for some time — maybe someone can help me track them down. They’re both originally from live-action segments, shot on film and played between skits; I transcribed them from memory, arranged them, and played them in concert in 1998, with excerpts here:

The first one was originally scored for an ensemble that included bassoon and glockenspiel, and I don’t remember what the original film was, besides that it was something in a natural setting.

The closest I ever came was the album “The Philip Glass Ensemble - Einstein on the Beach” or “Dance Nos. 1-5″. Last week I saw a section of Sesame Street where they sang ” Get Up” to the tune of Outkast’s “Hey Ya.” It shows a story line of a little African American boy’s morning routine, helped by his father.
We haven’t been able to get it out of our heads. Do you know where I can find it?

I have vague and fond memories of a clip about catapillars and brown boots. One little catapillar can’t climb up a mushroom and the other comes along and tells him “Catapillar, don’t you know that Catapillars never, ever wear brown boots?” I loved it, does anyone have it?

Anyone know of the Sesame Street animation about a boy with a dog named Happy. The boy gives the dog a treat and the dog is so happy he grabs his tummy and says mmm and even floats on air. The boy says that’s why we call him happy. I would love to show my kids so they know why their mommy grabs her tummy and says mmm mmm mmm if food is really good! LOL!

Hello all, I’m hoping someone can help me with this one. There was this short on Sesame Street that was just music playing, I couldn’t say what the song way, but all the I remember during the song was that there were dolls moving in stop-motion animation and also at some point there was the Voyager spacecraft (at least I think it was Voyager, it could be some other satellite) performing a spin. That’s really all that I remember about it, hopefully someone remembers it and can at least point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

However, I must be an oddball here, because the two skits that I remember and would LOVE to see, I don’t think have been mentioned. Reur post on 04 December 2006 (01:24 PM), believe me, you’re not alone. That song has been playing in my head since the first time I heard it (ditto for my two brothers), and to date (i’m 38) we haven’t found any recording, or youtube posting, of it. In fact, I chanced upon this blog trying to google the “look around” song and hoping that it turns up somewhere in cyberspace. It’s the most overlooked piece of music on sesame street. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s on the Sesame Street “old school” DVD, which I just ordered from Amazon. If it ain’t there I’ll just have to write and beg the producers for it. Best of luck to us both.

My favorite was “It’s a long hard climb but I’m gonna get there” with the tree frog climbing the tree, that’s the clip I remember most that I can’t find anywhere. If anyone happens to have that I’d very much like to see that again!

This might be a long shot, but I’m looking for a clip from this season of Sesame Street - I don’t remember which episode it’s in, but it’s a 10 minute clip at the beginning of the episode called “Cookie’s World.” It’s cookie monster doing his version of Elmo’s World. I didn’t see this in the Muppet videos above. It’s by far, without question, the best and funniest Muppet song ever! While “Telephone Rock” is a classic, one of the most melodic and funny songs by the Muppets, without any question at all, (including “I’m Between”, a true classic not mentioned in an above videos), is a little all-time best called “Listen To The Bells.” Pleeeze - someone guide me to a link that shows America and me the absolute funniest Muppet video ever made!!!

Am I crazy? The 2nd best Muppet video of all-time isn’t “telephone Rock” OR “Count It Highter” (two incredible classics)! Not even the “Oh, I’m Between” song that should be an above link like everything else. J.D., you nailed it again! I know there were several Seasame Street clips called “Danger,” but this is EXACTLY the one I was after! I remember a few other versions, but they were a bit later, if I’m not mistaken. This earlier, and quite clearly more classic version, was the exact one I was looking for! Everyone has done great for me and has fulfilled every song I’ve been looking for out there and it’s been really amazing, but no one - even you, J.D. - has come close to touching the fact about knowing about my own, little-known song “I’m Between” with the muppet in between the two monsters? Jeff, yes, those clips are true classics! I remember them as a kid and still apply them to everyday life! The “Up and Down” and “Slow and Fast” clips are the type of songs that are truly the essense of Sesame Street enjoyment! Any luck finding the “I’m Between” skit and song?

The Slow and Fast muppet brothers video was exactly the one I remembered, but the “Up and Down” song was not the one I’m thinking of. Isn’t there another “Up and Down” song video clip that has the I remember? They also mention “back and Forth” and “To and Fro” in the song. Not much help, huh? It’s really a fun and rythmic song!

I have gone through every post on this site. Everyone seems to be in the same boat, and that makes us big kids feel normal. Having read each one, though, it seems clear two people need to be thanked (and by everyone) the most. Other than J.D. who, without this, we wouldn’t even be here listening to and watching our dreams at all, Jeff and Steven needs the most gratitude. Finding all of the links you have is idescribable. I’m looking for a Sesame Street song….I don’t know if there is a name for the song or not. I think it’s Oscar in the middle with two other characters, one on either side of Oscar….it goes like this:

Simply incredible! How do you know all that stuff? Both of you guys are truly Sesame Street geniuses! The information you provide is invaluable and the song videos and clips are priceless! Do you know each other? Anyway, thanks so much to both of you for the links. They mean a lot and you guys are truly the Gurus of this show!

As impressed as I am by all the clips and information you locate and provide for everyone (both of you), I’m surprised, Jeff, that you don’t know the I’m Between song. No question - it was definitely a Sesame Street song with muppets. I truly DO appreciate you acknowledging the song, Jeff, as I was thinking for awhile no one out there had a clue!

Both you guys have come up with far more obscure trivia, information, and links than this song. That’s why I’m a little bewildered why you haven’t heard of, or even been able to locate it.

At the risk of butchering the lyrics, I’ll do my best. Maybe Jeff or Steve can do their magic, or soemone else can possibly help, given these really lame lyrics I’m about to provide. However, seeing Ray sound out the “Mahna Mahna” lyrics above, I am a bit more inspired to embarrass myself with the I’m Between lyrics. The video had a muppet guy (no one we really know) in between two monster muppets (again no muppets we know - maybe an early Harry monster version). Hi guys! Great job on the site! Keep up the hard work I was wondering if you remember 2 fav clips of mine. I’m old enought to remember when they were new. First was a long haired blonde woman doing a gymnastics routine on the uneven bars. I don’t remember the context though. Actually the first Mahna Mahna is originally from sesame street. They did a remake of it on the Muppet show later.

Thanks for these. When I was a kid, I remember a counting series that went up to ten that was from the first years (Late 60’s) that was psychadelic in style (Not the pinball type) but it had monsters and animals and ended with “One, Two, Three, Four Five. . .. Six Senven Eight NIIIIINE, ten.” you know the one.

And then there were some letter cartoons that I just loved. My favorite was the Letter “i” and word “impolite” (”yes, I guess this ‘i’ does look like a one with a ball on top” “Not something Like, Exactly like, pin head! You have the mind of a flea!”

I cannot find anything on the “I’m between” song but I’ll continue to look. Also, the “up and down” song I linked to a couple of weeks back has been taken off. Did anyone grab that one. My two daughters cry every day because they can’t watch it anymore.

Has anyone found the video for the “Hole in the Bucket (…dear Liza, dear Liza)..”?? My mom and I just told my kids about the skit, taught them the lyrics and they thought it was hysterical at the end. Pity we can’t see the actual clip. Anyone??? Much appreciated if located!!!

I have looked everywhere about that my name is fred cartoon, it went “my name is fred, they call me ed, and every time I go to bed I hit my head” I didn’t think I just imagined htat existed!

I’ve been trying really hard to find the little sesame street cartoon where a couple of kids voices find the hiding birds. For instance, one pops out of the clouds and one is hiding behind a bush and stuff like that. It’s a still image and then when one of the kids points out a bird, the bird becomes animated. My only reason is that i was one of the kids talking in the cartoon. I did the recording when i was 5. I’m 17 now. I would just love to see it again for memory’s sake. Do you think you could help me?

Regarding the YouTube video clip of Caterpillars Never Wear Brown Boots, I don’t remember a skit on Sesame Street with a caterpillar wearing brown boots. However, I did find a Sesame Street YouTube video clip of Simple Simon with three animals who had a different body part that belonged to one of the animals, (one of the animals was a sheep who was wearing brown boots). At the end of the skit, Simple Simon said to the sheep “Sheep don’t wear boots” if that was the video clip skit you were looking for. The clip also showed how records are made during the song…I can’t find that anywhere, not youtube, not anywhere on the net. Hi guys! Great job on the site! Keep up the hard work I was wondering if you remember 2 fav clips of mine. I’m old enought to remember when they were new. First was a long haired blonde woman doing a gymnastics routine on the uneven bars in slow motion. A voice says “slow” over and over.. I don’t remember the context though. The other was a group of kids and the Letter J they were learning how to make a jumpsuit. At the end they were jumping on a trampoline in slow motion. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Read online that the French Bayou pon pon song was probably sung by Dewey Balfa and his band. After listening to some of his songs on Itunes, and seeing his picture, I think he’s the guy. I couldn’t find a clip of him preforming that song however.

It had been so long since I’d seen it and there’s no trace of it online, that I thought I had dreamed it or something. It is also a possibility that it was on Electric Company not Sesame Street, but I think it was Sesame Street.

Recently I’ve watched on You Tube the alphabet song with the construction workers sitting on a steel girder eating lunch - one has a lunchbox with a pianist playing a grand piano ….the other “worker man” only has a peanut butter sandwich. Help, my grandson wants to watch it again and Granny can’t find it. Great site!

Does anyone have the following video clips from Sesame Street from the 1970’s? All are live-action films.

1. ‘Fred, get me a 20′ - A man (Joe Raposo) gets sent on a mission to find a 20. He finds the numbers 11 through 19 along the way, then runs into a gorilla (and the 20) in the end.

2. Gymnast - one clip featuring a gymnast (blonde hair, black leotard) is on YouTube, namely ‘between.’ Does anyone have the other five (’around, ”beginning/end,’ ‘close to/away from,’ ‘over/under,’ and ’slow’)?

3. ‘Beginning/end’ - four stop-motion films that feature a barber giving a customer a haircut, a man painting a picture, a man eating a hot dog, and kids waiting in line.

4. Scuba diver - two clips featuring a scuba diver, one where he finds five shells underwater, counts them on the shore, and is surprised by a crab, and one where kids say ‘Boo!’ and he swims ‘away from’ them.

5. Post office - a hip song about the post ofice and mail delivery, where one line goes ‘…to the post office where it will stay, for just one day…’
