15 August 2001 — Infrequent Update (0)

Hm. I guess I haven't written in quite a while. This is due largely to the Diablo II addiction that I've developed.

For several weeks I spent every available moment playing the game. It was only last weekend that I realized that this behavior was turning my brain to some sort of gelatinous substance. I'm making an effort to severely curtail my playing time. And to counteract the effects of the game, I've begun to read again.

We had dinner at Laura and Michael's on Sunday (with Chris and Cari, too). Laura and I talked a little about books and she recommended Wallace Stegner, particularly his Pulitzer Prize-winning Angle of Repose.

I picked it up the other day and so far I am impressed. Stegner's style is clear and direct, and he writes with an intellect that is missing from much contemporary fiction. (For example, Barbara Kingsolver's much-lauded The Poisonwood Bible is to me nothing more than poorly-written dreck with pretensions of importance.)

I also picked up some more music from Aimee Mann. Kris and I have been listening to her latest album, Bachelor No. 2, almost non-stop for six weeks. The music is fantastic. The lyrics are clever. It's well-crafted pop music of the best sort.

I ought to remove the column at the left. With blogger, it's just too clumsy to maintain the news headlines and the current book/CD. If I ever develop my own journaling software, I'll make it easy to update such things.

I may be closer to doing just that, too. Computer Resources finally managed to accumulate enough cash to purchase a business computer. This is a big step. It was satisfying to build the machine and to install legal copies of the operating system and software. It's running Windows 2000 Professional and Progeny Debian GNU/Linux.

Computer Resources has kept me busy lately. I've been working several hours a week for the business, utilizing all of my computer skills. I'm doing programming for OGI, web design for Custom Box Service and Wilcox Arredondo (not yet complete), and building hardware for myself and others. If I wanted, I think that I could drop from five days a week at Custom Box to four days and devote one full day per week to Computer Resources. However, since I'm not actually paying myself anything for my Computer Resources work yet, I'm going to put off that step.

Nice to write again. Been a long time.

2005Books That Stick   These are the books that have most stuck with us. We think of them often. We compare other books to them. They're the cream of the crop.

2003Prize-Winning Cat   In which I toot my own horn: my hobby earns me $35 at the Clackamas County Fair.
