11 April 2002 — Hypertext (0)

I was looking for on-line resources for learning SQL when I found SQL for Web Nerds (which seemed just about right), a book by Philip Greenspun. Greenspun is something of a polymath and a frequent high-ranked search result when I have googled for various subjects in the past: books, photography, bicycling, investing, etc. He is also a co-founder of Ars Digita.

The SQL text is fine reading despite its dry subject. Greenspun is a witty writer; better, he knows his stuff. At one point he jokes about using the internet to pick up babes. I found this amusing enough to forward to Mac and Pam (who haven't been privy to much forwarding of links lately because I've been busy and haven't had time to scour the web for the wonderful and the inane).

Greenspun appends his piece with a note that wow, he actually did date someone he met on-line. By following links, I found her web site from college, which is a den of creative genius. She's a computer geek and math nerd. She's sleep deprived. She's beautiful. (Perhaps she's the perfect woman?) She reminds me of Jordan from Real Genius (film quotes).

Her site reminded me of Matthias Wandel, whose site I posted in December (and his brother, Markus Wandel). Matthias' site is amazing. Or, more precisely, the things that he has on his site are amazing: his home-made pipe organ, his marble machines, the digital camera he built from a flatbed scanner, etc. When I look through his pages, I feel like I'm looking into the mind of a genius.

Matthias' site reminded me of Erich Harshbarger's site. Harshbarger makes a living by building lego sructures: desks, sculptures, and more (and more and more and more and more). He also is fascinated by Alice (as is Kris), posts free java applets, plays Scrabble, and more.

2005Weekend at Rosings Park   We had a pleasant weekend at Rosings Park. I have cat photos to prove it.

2003The f-Stops Here   I promised to refrain from photography talk but once a week, but…

2001Toward a Pastoral Lifestyle   Jeremy and Jenn and Andrew mock me for my desire for a so-called pastoral lifestyle. They believe that it isn't achievable. But I know that it is. I want to return to a life of relaxation and happiness.
