27 January 2003 — Holding Pattern (12)

Nothing much to say:

Hanging out with friends, eating too much, not reading anything but photography books and old comics. Trying to make a CD-mix of science-fiction realted songs (prime examples: "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, "Major Tom by Peter Schilling, "Why Me?" by Planet P Project, and "Rocket Man" by Elton John) -- I could really use some more suggestions.

I'm taking tomorrow off to go make some photographs. Our assignment this week is "multiple exposures", but I find it more technical than artistic and, thus, less fun. But more time-consuming.

The Silverton area might provide some good shots, though: the town itself is interesting, and rumor has it that the Oregon Garden has free admission this month (which isn't surprising since there probably isn't much to see). My ultimate destination is Silver Creek Falls; I'm going to get some practice with my wide-angle lens.

On this day at foldedspace.org

2005Moonshowers   When I turned down Gribble Road this morning — the final leg of my drive to work — I was struck by an oddness about the scene before me.

2004Red Right Ankle   Kris and I watch Life as a House, and I like it in spite of myself. I am swamped with computer work. I'm getting thinner and I've lost my belt, so my pants keep falling down. I *love* the song Red Right Ankle by The Decemberists.

2002Eila's 32nd Birthday   We sat around a table, drinking our cosmopolitans and our Mexican coffees, and we played UNO while pumping dollar bills into the jukebox.

Star Treking by the Firm

Doctorin' the Tardis by "the Timelords" (actually KLF)

Yoda by Weird Al (to the tune of Lola)

Pure Energy by Information Society (has samples of Leonard Nimoy)

For Science by They Might Be Giants

The Guitar (the lion sleeps tonight) also by TMBG (well, it's got a spaceship in it!)

Modern Love by David Bowie

Radio Ga-Ga by Queen is sort of SF-ish

Anything from the Flash Gordon or Highlander soundtracks, both by Queen

The Cantina Band song from the Star Wars soundtrack

Europa and the Pirate Twins by Thomas Dolby. Heck, half the songs on Golden Age of Wireless

I haven't heard it, but there's a soundtrack album out for the yet-to-be-released Spaceship Zero movie, done by the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. That might provide some grist for the mill...

Mr. Roboto &/or Come Sail Away, Styx

The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas, TMBG

You Will Go To The Moon, Laika, Entropy, and The Mitosis Waltz, Moxy Fruvous

Silent Running, Mike and the Mechanics

(Bit of a theme here)
Pocket Full of Kryptonite (Jimmy Olsen Blues), Spin Doctors

Superman's Song, Crash Test Dummies

Superman, Five for Fighting

Real World, Matchbox 20

More as they occur to me. I'm guessing that you want 'pop' songs, and not suggestions like 'Also Spake Zarathustra' and 'Blue Danube Waltz', both of which are rather SF-ish :) I also assume you don't really want 'parody' songs, like Star Trekking, even though I included several in my first block of suggestions.

Who needs to work? How about here?

Or here?

And, of course, there's here

(Also, Twilight Zone by the same band)

Also, Paranoimia by Art of Noise (featuring Max Headroom)

Perhaps this would be of interest?

This is a bit more of a novelty kind of song, but there's always Chewbacca - What a Wookie!

Darkest of the Hillside Thickets

Ookla the Mok, another "SF" Band...

or "Planet Earth" by Duran Duran?

or "Ray of Light" by Madonna?

or "Stars" by Hum?

or "Two Worlds Collide" by Inspiral Carpets?

or "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa?

or "Starseed" by Our Lady Peace?

or anything by Kraftwerk . . .

Sheesh!

You guys came up with some good stuff, even some stuff that I normally wouldn't have considered but actually think is ideal for this science fiction mix (e.g. "Intergalactic Planetary" by The Beastie Boys).

Dana, I did google first thing. I found a too-comprehensive page here. Too much information is almost worse than not enough, you know?

The Flash Gordon suggestion rocks: we loved this soundtrack as kids, and a science fiction mix wouldn't be complete without the opportunity to hop around wailing, "Flash -- ah-ah-ah, he saved every one of us!"

Y'all have given me plent of suggestions. As soon as I fix hamburger helper for dinner, I'll sit down and start downloading! I'll post the final list for the mix when I've finished.

As for the photography: I shot four rolls of film, but in my mind, I'm only pleased with a couple of the shots. Ah well -- we'll see tomorrow when I get the prints back.

I'm just glad other people chimed in -- I was worried it was going to be an All Dana, All The Time sort of response :)

I didn't mean to imply that you hadn't googled -- I just always say that before giving a link I found on google, as a sort of ironic counterpoint. (Shrug)

Other bits:

Everybody Wants to Rule The World - Tears for Fears

Party Man - Peter Gabriel, off of the Virtuosity sound track (a song I like quite a bit, although I haven't seen the film).

Robot Parade - TMBG again!

Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles (More technology than SF, but in the ballpark)

Aldebaran - Enya

Here is another list, courtesy of google. Nothing particularly great, except possibly an apparently swedish band: Star Pilot On Channel K, which looks promising...

Ooo! Ooo! (Mr. Kotter!)

Nothing But Flowers - Talking Heads, about a guy in a post apocalyptic "back to nature" future, missing junk food and modern civilization

Back In Time - Huey Lewis and the News

Weird Science - Oingo Boingo

Dr. Zaius - Troy McClure, "Songs in the Key of Springfield"

I suspect there's some SF-ish Frank Zappa, but I don't know his work at all, really.

Definitely try to work in Spaceship Zero from the Darkest of the Hillside Thickets as Dana suggested! Shoosh, fruitcake, it's da bomb.

Amazon has a couple of the songs up as free MP3s if you look here:
