I'm finally fairly awake. Up until an hour ago, I'd been in a more-or-less constant state of grogginess: not quite asleep, not quite awake. Now I'm awake and alert and able to write a coherent sentence.
I'm trying to figure out how many contraptions I have on my leg, but I lose track of them all in the mess of wraps and pads.
There's the dressing wrapping the knee, but I can't really see that. There's also a brace, or two, locking my leg in place. There are two dials on the main brace, with numbers ranging from zero to ??? (I can't actually see them), representing degrees of freedom in moving the knee. (Except when I'm exercising my leg in the continuous passive motion machine, the dials, and the brace, are locked at zero: my leg is held completely rigid.)
Also integrated into this mass of padding is the cryocuff. I love the cryocuff.
The cryocuff comprises three components: a cooler which is filled with ice water, an inflatable cuff which wraps around the knee, and a hose which connects the cooler to the cuff. Every couple of hours, we rotate the water in the crycuff, draining the old water and replacing it with cool, soothing water from the cooler. And as the cryocuff is filled, it expands, providing comforting pressure to the area around the knee.
We didn't pay much attention to the cryocuff for the first 24 hours I was home; we discovered it this afternoon, and it makes a significant difference in how I feel. If we pump in fresh water every hour or two, the pain isn't nearly as bad.

2005 — Getting Things Done I spent the weekend implementing the system found in David Allen's Getting Things Done.
2004 — Einstein's Dreams Kris and I went antique shopping on Saturday. I found a great book -- Collier's Wonder Book -- which contained a bit about Einstein written in 1920. This reminded me of the wonderfully strange book, Einstein's Dreams.
2002 — Spring Photos I haven't been taken many photographs lately which is probably just as well since most of my pictures suck. Nevertheless, over the past few months I've accumulated a handful of pictures that I'm willing to share for various reasons...
2001 — Fairy Tales and Fantasies We just saw Shrek, which isn't bad, at a Regal Cinemas theater, which IS bad. Also, Pam made an interesting point about the nature of science fiction last week, and I've been thinking about it quite a bit.
I've been looking for someone who has been through a knee replacement surgery and am wondering if you might be one. I tore the ACL and broke a foot too, but we're replacing the knee and leaving the ACL out of it.
If you've just done a knee replacement, would you mind letting me know what to REALLY expect please?
