04 August 2003 — Nemo, Found (4)

If you're one of the Russell Crowe-seekers, the bit about his new film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, can be found here.

Of course all Kris had to do was give me permission to get a new cat and I had framed in my mind what that cat would look like and what its name would be. So when I stumbled upon that very cat in the pet store last week, how could I help but bring it home with me?

Nemo — named for the comic strip character not the fish — meets all of the qualifications for my ideal cat: he's a ten-week-old male Siamese cross with short hair. He's inquisitive and affectionate.

Day One
I was worried at first that Nemo wasn't going to fit in; he spent most of his first day with us shut in the larder, hiding under chairs and behind suitcases. When he did come out, he cowered. He seemed uninterested in love.

Day Two
On Saturday morning Nemo seemed more at ease, though. He played with ribbons and rafia and the wiretoy. He let us pet him. In the afternoon we let him out to explore a bit. Toto and Simon kept their distance, staring at the intruder with ears flat and eyes wide. From time-to-time someone hissed.

Day Three
Yesterday Nemo found his groove. He spent nearly the entire on Kris' lap alternately sleeping and purring (sometimes both!). When Kris got up to get some food or do a chore, Nemo followed her around the house, squeaking for attention. The bigger cats began to feel personally affronted, and undertook a campaign of terror; they followed their little brother from room to room, demonstrating proper hissing technique. (Actually, things weren't as bad as they might have been. Nobody stalked the kitten, which was what I feared most. Toto and Simon were just perpetually cranky.) In the evening, Nemo begged for ice cream.

Thus far — and I know it's early — Nemo has exceeded my expectations. Except for a flea problem, he's a fine cat. He likes nothing more than to be scritched and stroked and loved. Kris has been wanting a lap cat, and I think she's got one.

We think we might throw a Kitten Shower. It seems only fair.

Congrats on adding to your fur family! Nemo is very, very cute! Hanna and Theo are doing well. They are especially happy because Ruby's friend Honey went home yesterday after spending 9 days with us. Ruby, however, is suffering from doggie depression. She is a very social dog and craves companionship. Honey lives with two cats, one of whom loves dogs. Ruby likes to visit her house because she can lick Mit (the dog-loving cat) and nuzzle her ears, and Mit will return the affection by rubbing up against her. If we had more time, a bigger house, etc., we might get another dog (I know, I know, we are disgraceful).

I'm glad my new grandcat is fitting in so well! :-) He's very cute! I have had various experiences acclimatizing new cats. When I brought Kraft here from the shop, I just plopped him in here with the other two, Stevie and Chester, and he fit in well quite quickly except that he bullied poor Chester, which unfortunately continued for several years. Stevie was his sister and although they batted at each other sometimes, they were mostly comfortable with each other, so they may have recognized each other's smell. After that I read that a new cat should be introduced gradually by shutting him or her into a separate room for a few weeks, something I had never done. When Silver was introduced to the household, it turned out to be automatically gradual because he was confined to a kennel in the office while his surgically-mended broken leg healed. The other cats had the opportunity to come in the office and sniff around the cage and get used to his smell. Still, when he was finally well enough to let out, there was a big adjustment. He was naturally friendly and playful, which my territorial other cats didn't appreciate at all, except for Kraft, who amazingly loved him right away. Now Kraft is gone and Chester and Stevie seem to have grudgingly accepted his presence. I wish that for Nemo with your other cats at the very least, although it would be nice if they could all be like Kraft was with Silver.

Those red eyes make Nemo look downright satanical, but surely they are really blue. He looks adorable. Welcome to the family - hope that the other cats are getting along better by now.
