14 September 2003 — Turning It Around (11)

Every time I reach some sort of personal nadir, I follow it with a burst of unusual productivity. This weekend was no different.

Fitness
I worked out with Dave (though I couldn't lift half the weight that he could, and though today I am sore sore sore). I prepped my bike for commuting later this week. I helped Kris buy a new bike. I ate salmon burgers (though I didn't enjoy them). I only ate half as many chocolate-covered red vines as I wanted.

Chores
I mowed the lawns. I picked up a new battery pack for the drill. I started to mount the peg board in the laundry room. I tried to charge the new battery pack. I determined that the charger itself was not working, so I tested it on another outlet. I regretted having spent $35 on the new battery pack since the old one is probably fine after all. I "totally picked up the living room." (Though I helped make it messy again within two hours.) I marveled that we ran three loads of dishes in three days. I took out the trash.

Computers
I finished work on Rex's computer and delivered it to him. I drove over to work on Dan and Judy's computer. I did my business finances. I rid Kris' computer of spyware. I established my new 120gb external hard drive on every computer I regularly use. I sorted some mp3s.

Writing
I cleaned the library table and made a space to write. I bought a stack of college-ruled notebook paper. I found my favorite books about writing (The Elements of Style, On Writing, Making Shapely Fiction, The Language of the Night, Steering the Craft) and stacked them on the table. I leafed through them. I registered for the fall creative writing class at the community college. I started a poem.

Personal
I uninstalled Magic Online from my computer. After reading all the Johnny Cash testimonials, I went out and bought The Essential Johnny Cash. I listened to Johnny Cash all weekend (except when Kris, in desperation, made me listen to the Bend it Like Beckham soundtrack). I played with the cats. (For fifteen minutes in the middle of last night, Toto sat on my pillow and purred while Nemo sat on my chest and purred. Progress!) With Kris, I watched four more episodes of Six Feet Under. We would have watched more if we had them to watch. I won both of my fantasy football games (moving to 4-0 on the new season). I read the Robinson Crusoe issue of Classics Illustrated and browsed through the novel. I toyed with my harmonica (since that's the most I can do).

It was a good weekend.

2004The George Foreman Grill   The George Foreman grill is actually pretty cool. Who would have guessed?

2002Oregon 58, Idaho 21   Boise Cascade, one of Custom Box Service’s suppliers, gave us four tickets to today’s University of Oregon football game versus the University of Idaho. Nick (who is my cousin) and I were willing and able to go; we invited Nick’s brother, Ron, and Nick’s thirteen-year-old nephew, Chris, to join us.

Wow you were productive. I manged to harvest a bunch of stuff from my garden and can some ketchup. Anna Lise is sick so that takes up time too. Kids are not easy to take care of at anytime let alone when they are sick! When Wally's a little older i'd like to take another creative writing class too. Who is the instructor? I assume your taking these at the Clackamas Community College? Do you realize how close you'll be to me?

What would be a good software program to use to check my computer for spyware?

I like Spybot Search and Destroy, though there's a program called Ad Aware that's pretty good, too.

You'd be surprised at how many sneaky little programs get on your computer, even if you're *trying* to keep them away! :)

That'd be AdAware.

I've used AA, but not SSD. But I've been happy enough with AA not to bother looking for anything else.

On the other hand, I mostly live in Linux, and for some reason I don't have spyware problems... =)

Teen Girl Squad is quite random. It was pretty funny, though....I think!

Yeah, but did anyone catch my gaffe with "solar interference from 45,000 light years away". One brownie point for the first person to tell me what is wrong with that phrase (technically, not grammarly).

Hm. I ought start awarding brownie points for things: noticing technical mistakes, letting me know about typos, winning quote contests. :)

Um, well, it should probably be 'stellar interference', technically, as it's not Sol, the sun, doing the interfering. But I'm not sure if that's what you are getting at.

Although, now that I think about it, it's not really either solar or stellar interference.

It's electromagnetic interference from a star 45k ly distant.

Do I get the no-prize?
=)

Bingo!

Dana earns one brownie point. Andrew Parker and Joel have five for their performances on the quote quiz a while back. (Kris has unlimited brownie points because she always points out my typos...)

I won that shooting-balls-into-fishbowls thing you linked to a while back...don't I get anything?

I'll have to put up a scoreboard. Kris will be forced to start again at zero, I'm afraid. I've lost count of all the typos she's corrected.
