02 January 2004 — End of an Era (2)

Two recent events have cemented by decision to put an end to Computer Resources Northwest, LLC.

Computer Resources was born three years ago, the brainchild of three foolish geeks, geeks with disparate visions. Too disparate, it turned out. When I asked to end the partnership, Andrew and Jeremy graciously acquiesced. I've been running the business as a sole proprietorship ever since.

The thing is, while I like to work with computers, and while I like to be of service to my friends and family, I hate feeling obligated to do it, hate doing it as a source of income. (Though, honestly, Computer Resources has never been the source of much income; I've never charged enough. At best, it's helped defray the cost of gadgets I might have purchased in any case.)

Lately, when potential clients have contacted me, I've been filled with dread. I don't want to fix their computers! I don't want to build their web sites! I don't want to build a machine for them!

The Computer Resources domain expired on December 27th. I'm not renewing it.

Tony's computer here at Custom Box Service died last week. Rather than purchase a new computer through another source, I'm selling my Computer Resources machine to the company. This will allow me to either pay off a bit of my debt, or it will allow me to purchase a low-end Macintosh to replace it.

(I've come to realize that I only need a low-end computer with ample storage space in order to meet my needs. I want a computer for writing, for image manipulation, for internet use, and, most importantly, for music storage. I wish that Apple would finally start equipping their machines with sufficient memory and hard drive space, but I've been wishing that for more than a decade, so I might as well give up hope…)

I'll continue to help friends and family with their computer trouble — I enjoy that — and I'll continue to maintain the network for Sabino's businesses, but I'm not going to take on any new clients. I'm just not interested.

I wonder which you will choose? :)

Darn! Now that I have become acquainted with the folded space site I was just thinking of getting up the nerve to ask you to build me a site I could answer tax questions on and post tax info. Some things don't wait. I probably would get tired of the constant time spent too. That's why I gave up computer installations and problem solving. There always seemed to be the client who needed help at 3 am or on the weekends. You get the idea. I do enjoy reading your comments.
