18 March 2004 — Catfilter (5)

AskMetafilter is a great variant of the Metafilter concept. Sometimes there are repeat questions (which doesn't bug me), and there most certainly are recurrent themes. For example, people ask a lot of questions about their cats. For some reason, dog owners don't have a whole lot of questions, but we cat owners are puzzled by our enigmatic companions.

Here, then, is a complete collection of all the cat-related questions from AskMetafilter. As new cat-related threads appear, I'll add them to the list. Enjoy!

December
11 Dec 03: Cat Trouble- my wife and I have two huge cats, each of whom grew up being the only game in town. They seem to live for combat. How can we keep them from clawing the hell out of each other? [more inside] (posted by COBRA! at 8:30 AM PST - 20 comments)

14 Dec 03: I just adopted a new cat. Ever since I got her home, she's been hiding under the bed--she's absolutely terrified (strange house, strange person, existing cat--he's not been aggressive towards her, just intensely curious). How long is an acceptable period of time for her to get used to living here? She's not eaten or drank anything for at least 24 hours and I'm starting to get worried. 19 Dec 03:: How do I find a lost cat? [more inside] (posted by adampsyche at 6:07 AM PST - 21 comments)

20 Dec 03: Um, we have two kittens and a Christmas tree. This is an unfortunate combination. How do we keep them from knocking it and its ornaments to the floor? [More inside] (posted by lackutrol at 11:30 PM PST - 21 comments)

January
05 Jan 04: I desperately want a cat, and my S.O. is slightly allergic. Does anyone know if there are any breeds of cat that are less likely to provoke an allergic reaction? Any suggestions for keeping his allergies from being a problem, other than a HEPA vacuum? Also, he wants a ferret. Is a ferret likely to cause him any problems? Am I likely to have any problems raising a ferret and a cat together? (posted by stoneegg21 at 4:34 PM PST - 34 comments)

15 Jan 04: What to do about a foundling kitten... [more inside] (posted by oflinkey at 5:36 PM PST - 33 comments)

17 Jan 04: Our three cats have fleas and worms. We've tried a couple of over-the-counter products, but they haven't helped (especially with the worms, which are our biggest concern). The vet wants to sell us expensive remedies, of which we are very skeptical. Before we shell out big bucks for the stuff the vet suggests, are there other things we should try? What has worked for you? (posted by jdroth at 7:49 PM PST - 13 comments)

29 Jan 04: My cat has had a little bald patch on his belly all his life. Gradually, over the last two years, he has started chewing at it with increasing vigor; now the bald patch extends over most of his belly, and occasionally he breaks his own skin. The vet has ruled out mites, fleas, and disease, and concluded that my cat is anxious or depressed and needs medication to control his behavior. Googling confirms that this is not as weird it seemed to me, but it seems pretty drastic. Any thoughts, or ideas for alternative treatments? (posted by DenOfSizer at 10:04 AM PST - 22 comments)

29 Jan 04: How often do I REALLY need to change my cat's kitty litter? (posted by adrober at 9:49 PM PST - 25 comments)

February
06 Feb 04: Kitty downers? One of our cats is an older ragdoll. He's generally very sweet and lives to snuggle. About a year ago, however, he started up with night crying - around 3 in the morning he wakes up and will. not. shut. the. &*@#. up. He has access to food, water, clean litter; the vet says there's nothing physically wrong with him. The cat's been sleeping in the basement so that we can sleep. He's not happy with this and yowls disconsolately most of the night, so loudly that we can hear it two floors away. I'd really like to get him back to normal. Any ideas? Experience with kitty sleeping pills? (posted by mimi at 7:00 AM PST - 25 comments)

06 Feb 04: My cat almost always shows an interest in people food - until you offer it to her, upon which, almost invariably, she will sniff it and look disappointed. This happens even with uncooked chicken and tuna from the can. Also, whenever we open a can, she runs frantically into the kitchen and tries to see up on the counter - she eats dry cat food, and I've tried to serve her wet food, but no dice on that. Do cats really remember a specific food from the past? Is she hoping for something gross I would never buy, like canned pigs feet or something? Or was she perhaps posioned by people food and distrusts it now? She came from a shelter a couple of years ago (found in a motel) so I have no idea what her background is. March
05 Mar 04: When I let my cats outside on a sunny spring day, the first thing they do is eat grass. They're like miniature lawnmowers. Later, they hack the grass back up (like a hairball). Why do they do this? (Meaning: why do they eat the grass in the first place, and why do they then spit it back up?) (posted by jdroth at 8:10 AM PST - 13 comments)

13 Mar 04:Is it possible to take cats for a walk ? (posted by sgt.serenity at 7:42 PM PST - 26 comments)

16 Mar 04: I'm a first time cat owner with a new 12-week-old kitten. I've read all the handbooks and official information I can get my hands on but I'm looking for practical advice from experienced "cat people" about feline psychology, training with positive reinforcement, and cat-proofing the house. How does this little crazy ball of fur become part of the family? (more inside) (posted by web-goddess at 7:51 PM PST - 44 comments)

18 Mar 04: AskCatFilter: I've had cats almost all my life; currently my girlfriend and I have three of them. One of them has an odd behavior that I've never noticed before, and I can't seem to figure out. [More Inside] (posted by jammer at 8:49 AM PST - 16 comments)

I'm tempted to do another entry: Webloggers and their cats!. For example, here are my cats: Toto (with bird), Nemo, and Simon. (In memoriam: Tintin ("the best cat ever") and Satchell.)

On this day at foldedspace.org

2005Warm and Hearty   Paul and Susan allowed me to spend an evening and a morning with them in their new home. I had fun, despite a long quest for warm and hearty food.

2003Character Camp   "How could you not know?" Byron asked, his temper rising. "This is what we had planned. We each spent the night alone, and then came back together as a group. That was the Whole Point."

2001Knock Knock   I was just awakened by a soft, rhythmic knocking. What was it? (Also: capsule reviews of the book and film versions of Lolita.)

Zzzzzzz. Bang! oops guess I accidently shot your cat; just rolled over and the gun went off. Oh well. Zzzzzzzzz...

Was this just your way of telling us that your cats have fleas and worms?

And now that I'm thinking about it, what is it with your family and talking about worms, anyway? You and Tammy have a secret intestinal parasite club going?

Tammy, you just caused me to snort audibly. At work. I hope you're proud of yourself!

Yes, I am quite proud of myself. And dave, I still haven't got up the nerve to deworm. Somehow pooping worms is not something I look forward to no matter how good it would be for my health!
