05 August 2004 — Guilty Pleasure Music (13)

What's your favorite guilty pleasure music? You know, music you love but know you shouldn't.

For Johnny Doe, it's AC/DC. Many of you can probably guess that for me, it's ABBA. Or, more specifically, any modern interpretation of ABBA.

If you ask me, the A-Teens rock. I love their kinetic dance-ified versions of my favorite ABBA songs. But I also like Erasure's ABBA covers, and U2's version of "Dancing Queen", and all of the other odd ABBA remakes I hear.

If I'm tired and need waking, I listen to ABBA. If I'm blue and need cheering, I listen to ABBA. If I'm exuberant and want to continue the high, I listen to ABBA.

Just call me Muriel.

Of course, there's always Loverboy...

2005Bathroom Remodel: Part Four (with photos)   It's been a while since I've posted a remodeling update. Work progresses, though slowly. Visually, there's little to document.

2003Kid Pix   In which I loan my digital camera to a four-year-old and a five-year-old and they take photographs at a picnic.

A band called Therapy? does a really great version of ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight).

My guilty pleasure is KC & The Sunshine Band. ehehehe

My guilty pleasure is listening to something bass-heavy in my car - it's like wearing a giant set of headphones (and I get a back massage, too). :-)

"Oh, Muriel, you're awful."

I love ABBA. Haven't heard a lot of remakes - I'll have to investigate that. Did you see "Mamma Mia?"

I'm also in the AC|DC camp, heh.

I'd add in some classic disco, though. Don't want to listen to it all the time, but there are moments when nothing else will do.

Lynn, I've made an ABBA-esque mix for Jenn G. in the past. I'm sure I have a copy laying around somewhere. If I can find it, I'll bring it to you Saturday at book group. Pride and Prejudice and ABBA: heaven? :)

Oops.

I forgot that I meant to do a minor house update at the end of the main entry. This comment will have to do.

What with our Open House approaching, things are finally coming together. I had intended to mow the lawn yesterday — I haven't mowed in three weeks — but some beautiful summer rain nixed that. Instead, I finished wiring the parlor. Our neighbor, Mike — a former electrician — helped me with one outlet on Tuesday night (Jeremy, we didn't ground the other outlets properly!); I wired the remaining outlets by myself last night. I need to finish a light switch and the thermostat, and then all the wiring will be done.

I also hooked up our downstairs music system, which comprises Apple Airport Express (look for a weblog review of this thing tomorrow) and a set of formerly top-of-the-line computer speakers. The Airport Express lives behind the encyclopedias, and the speakers live next to other books. Upstairs, we stream music from iTunes to the Airport Express unit, and that's our stereo system. I love it.

Kris spent her evening organizing the art and mirrors, planning where each piece belongs in the house. She hung several items, too. I'm still not sure how we're going to mount our monster mirror, but we'll try.

So, we have power and sound and art. Tonight I'll mow the lawn, if the ground has dried enough. I'll also try to organize the shop and the garage. If time remains, I'll do some hand-weeding of the lawn and maybe some pruning of unruly hedges.

By the way: does anyone have a chainsaw I could borrow? The capping event of the Open House will be the felling of three locusts and a laurel. We need to get these cut down by Monday evening.

Admittedly, when I'm in the right mood (i.e. having a "headbanging" moment) I love to crank up Aerosmith, especially "Sweet Emotion".

Be careful with the chainsaw. I just read an article on CNN.com where a man fell from a ladder with a chainsaw in his hand and killed his wife! Kris, steer clear! http://cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/08/04/uk.chainsaw.death.reut/index.html

Hmm...I am such a 70's junkie that almost everything I listen to could be deemed as guilty pleasure music. Bee Gee's and Abba are two of them, but you can't forget ELO.

Hey J.D. - Lynn's not going to be at book group this month, but I'd love to listen to it and then pass it on to her!

ABBA fans unite!

It's too bad I won't be at book group - Denise and I do a killer Karaoke version of "Waterloo" - with alternating head movements, no less.
