25 March 2005 — 36 (23)

Happy birthday to me!

Thirty-six years ago today I was brought into this world. (Hi, Mom!) It's difficult to believe, but 1969 is closer to World War II than it is to today.

I'm getting old. And I'm starting to feel it.

I never really felt my age in the past. Mentally and physically, I didn't feel twenty-five or thirty-three. I felt eighteen.

Now, however, I'm beginning to feel thirty-six. I'm not sure i like that.

As is my tradition, I'm taking the day off as a personal holiday. I plan to spend most of the day playing World of Warcraft with Will and Andrew (and Joel, too, if he's around). First, though, I'm going to eat a nice breakfast with the cats, listening to mp3s of eighties music that I've ripped from vinyl records (Madonna, Flock of Seagulls, Bon Jovi, Red Rockers, INXS, Thompson Twins, etc.) I'll walk to Chinese food for lunch. Maybe I'll buy some peppermint candy ice cream in celebration. In the afternoon, I'll mow the lawn. Maybe I'll watch a movie with Kris tonight.

That's how the thirty-six-year-old J.D. celebrates!

On this day at foldedspace.org

2004Middle-Aged Man   As of today, I consider myself middle-aged. I am thirty-five. Childhood is a distant memory, and young adulthood has passed away. I am middle-aged.

Transfer in Progress   The site transfer is in progress.

200334   Thanks, everyone, for your birthday e-mails, phone calls, and cards.

200233 and Counting   And now we are thirty-three.

Happy Birthday JD- i have a year or so before i hit 36.

But, honestly, i've never felt so alive as i have in the last two months (since i turned 35).

I was thinking about "middle age" yesterday. I think it must be around mid-40s, because i don't feel middle-aged at all.

Happy Birthday cousin! I almost a decade older than you! That makes me feel old.

And pril, you're conclusion makes me shiver. I guess I'm definitely middle aged.

Congratulations.

My 35th didn't bother me at all. At 36, however, I realized that I was 90% of way to 40 and it hit me like a hammer.

So if that bothers you, um, try not to think about it.

John

Happy Birthday JD! I feel a sense of relief knowing and feeling that I am fully an adult. It took reaching my 30's to feel that way. Enjoy the 80's tune, hanging with the cats, playing games, eating Chinese food and ice cream, and spending a nice evening with the wife.

Hmmm... March 25th... why does that date ring a bell? Oh, I know -- it's Earthquake Day.

Today is the 12th anniversery of the "big" North Willamette Valley earthquake. Let's all sing the Earthquake Day song:

Happy earthquake day to you,
Happy earthquake day to you,
Happy earthquake day mister vice president of sales,
Happy earthquake day to you!

Hey J.D. - for some unknown reason I have never realized that our birthdays are as close as they are - but you will forever be older! Aha!

Happy Birthday, my AWL. I sure am glad that we're friends even if I am doomed to never get my one-eared rabbit.

Hey JD! I turn 36 on Tuesday. And I actually saw the Thompson Twins in concert twice and INXS back in '84. At least you are into the Decemberists; that'll keep you young.

First: Happy Birthday!

I found your site when I was searching for Randall Thompson's "Have Ye Not Known" and found your 2002 comments. I agree - this is great music! I sang it in college and am still singing it now in our church choir.

Now, as to feeling 36 (!!!) I say stop thinking about about how 'old' you are. I am 63 but in my mind, I am not "old". I still have the same attitudes and thoughts I had when I was "young", i.e around 18 or so. You are only as old as you think you are.

Enjoy your youth!

Alan

Happy birthday!

But - you are so not old. Nowhere near old.
Because I'm six years older than you are, and I am not old.

Got it?
