11 April 2005 — Weekend at Rosings Park (9)

We had a pleasant weekend at Rosings Park.

I did as much thinning of trees as I possibly could with a hatchet and a pruning saw. Toto and Nemo supervised my work. (I need to borrow a chainsaw from somebody in order to convert these branches to firewood.)

While I sawed and hacked, Kris planted things. With more than half an acre, it's difficult for her to find enough plants to fill every empty space, but she's working on it. All of the cats enjoy time spent outside with Mom and Dad. It's Family Time.

Toto, however, is easily spooked.

Family Time is best when there are no interlopers. When Flash comes around, Simon is quick to protect us.

Nemo had a particularly exciting weekend. First, he had a heated conversation with Walnut regarding the proper roles of cats and squirrels.

(Yes, the above photo is blurry. I still can't get the hang of autofocus on my new camera. Plus, these were low-light conditions which means slow shutter speeds or large aperatures or, as in this case, both.)

On Sunday, Nemo protested his empty food dish by finding his own breakfast.

We met with our bathroom contractor. We had dinner with the Gingeriches. We watched The Incredibles (which I enjoyed even more this second time around). I killed Troggs. Kris knitted. And in the end, I slept ten hours before getting up for work this morning.

2003The f-Stops Here   I promised to refrain from photography talk but once a week, but…

2002Hypertext   A search for on-line SQL resources spawns a hyperlinked adventure through the realms of genius.

2001Toward a Pastoral Lifestyle   Jeremy and Jenn and Andrew mock me for my desire for a so-called pastoral lifestyle. They believe that it isn't achievable. But I know that it is. I want to return to a life of relaxation and happiness.

It looks and sounds like a wonderful weekend . . . We spent a bit of time in the garden as well, moving soil, leveling, building raised beds, planting 3 apple trees that we will shape into some sort of espalier, putting in brick edging. I went to bed last night feeling like we didn't accomplish much, but after writing this list, it seems we did get a lot done. There is so much more to do . . .

Ah, Rosings Park. For me, it is the essence of young-adult bucolia.

Oh, I wanna come live in your yard!

I don't know, Amanda: you're liable to be eaten by a cat.

So what does bucolia mean? Must you use such big words Joel?

The word bucolia seems to be some sort of intellectual slang, as it does not actually appear in Webster's unabridged dictionary. The word bucolic does appear, however.

I believe Joel was making a reference to JD's longing for the pastoral life.

Thank you Jethro. I feel much more intelligent now. I shall add that to my vocabulary.
