27 April 2005 — A Fine Evening (2)

It is so nice to have moderately warm weather in the Willamette Valley again. It's 10:30, and I'm finally able to sit out on the back porch in comfort. In my pajamas. Smoking my pipe and sipping my Lagavulin. It's raining — we had thunderstorms earlier — but the air temperature is perfect.

And the taste of the pipe tobacco is perfect.

And the sound of the rain is perfect.

And the taste of the whiskey is perfect.

In fact, it's been a lovely evening all the way around.

When I got home from work, I spent several hours in the yard. First I chainsawed the trees and branches we cut down a couple of weeks ago. (Thanks, Mac!) When that was finished, Kris and I dragged the remaining branches to our burgeoning woodpile beneath the redwood. Then I mowed a bit of the lawn.

Later in the evening, Dave came over. We drove to Portland for dinner (at a Chinese place, the name of which I keep forgetting). The food was great. We also stopped at Borders where I broke down and spent $15 on a comic book compilation. (First comic purchase this month!)

On the way home, we stopped at the Springwater Grill. Dave and Karen are regulars at the bar there. It's always fun when he takes me in for a visit. We play a little game: I let Dave choose the drinks I order. Tonight I had a "Gin Zoo" (apparently created by or for Dave) and a shot of Laphroigh, a single malt scotch whiskey.

We talked.

I know it doesn't sound like much, but with the yardwork and the dinner with a friend (and now the pipe in my hands), it was a fine, fine evening.

(Oooh. As I've typed this, the crickets have begun to chirp. Sitting here on the back porch, I can hear a choir of crickets, the last scattered drips of rain (and water in the gutter), the occasional loud car on the highway, and the barking of dogs up the street. Again I say, this is a fine, fine evening.)

2004Sunriver 2004   We're back from the annual MNF Sunriver trip. This year's three-day getaway was one of the best yet, though I felt like an ass at times.

2003Shadows   Once again, Photo Friday has managed to anticipate my photography homework by a week. Next week's assignment in the Saturday class is to photograph shadows. Unfortunately, that's the Photo Friday subject for this week.
