09 July 2005 — Site Maintenance (6)

Help! Those of you viewing this site using Internet Explorer on a PC — is the right column skiddly-wumpus? I viewed this site using IE on Windows for the first time in a month last night, and was mortified to see that something somewhere seems broken. Is it broken on all computers using IE on Windows? How long has it been broken? Since I added the Flickr bar? Since I added more rotating photos in the upper right? Since some other point?

I want to get this fixed; your input will help me diagnose the problem.

While we're at it: I'm finally ready to admit that I've got too much stuff crammed into that right column. How much of this stuff do you actually use? Does anyone still use the "recent comments" section? Do any of you ever follow the links to other web sites? Is the calendar/archives section useful?

Flickr and the flotch aren't going anywhere, but I'm willing to consider removing one or more of the other modules.

What's more, I'm no longer content with the background patterns and the color scheme I'm using for foldedspace; I've considered returning to something more monochromatic (similar to the old layout as can be seen on my never-update photo page.

Basically, I'd love to hear any feedback you might have regarding the layout and functionality of this site.

(Meanwhile, I still need to scan some one-eyed rabbits so that I can remodel Denise's weblog.)

Thanks to Lisa, I have a screenshot of the ill-formed foldedspace. On the left is an example of the layout problem, on the right is how the sidebar should look. (Note that Windows98 lacks the arrow characters and replaces them with the dreaded empty boxes placeholder, too.)

How does it look in Firefox?

On this day at foldedspace.org

2004Unbathed   It's been three weeks now since I've had a bath, and after twenty-one showers, I've come to a conclusion: you shower-only people are crazy!

2003125   In which I have 125 degrees of flexion. In which I read 125 pages of Proust (and, thereafter, cannot help but rave about what I've read).

The only thing that I use in the right column is the calendar and the search box.

I usually use Firefox, but I just opened your site in IE. I'll send a screenshot of how it looks.

I use the recent comments listing to let me know if people have commented on past postings (except for the mini-bike posting which I dutifully ignore). I don't use the search box (the Go button is beneath the text box in my version of Firefox, btw). I use the Elsewhere box to get to other people's blogs on occasion.

I noticed something was off when you posted the spider entry, but you seem to have fixed the problem.

As for what I use:
Calendar (if I haven't been religiously visiting)
Recent Comments - sometimes
Elsewhere - to occasionally go somewhere I haven't been to in a while or at all.

I use IE and theres nothing wrong with the page.
I refer to your recent comments everytime I come here. I also use the calendar often to see if I've missed a day.

The thing I miss the most on MY blog is that recent comment box. I loved that thing.

I use your Elsewhere a lot too. I always scan the Flotch section.

I guess I use everything but Other Weblogs or Interesting Sites. I've never clicked on anything there.

Huh. The Go button wraps in my version of Firefox too.

It looks fine now. The crookedness bothered me at first but I guess I got used to it. It has vastly improved!

I use your Flickr link and also the Elsewhere links quite often. I also always check your Miscellaneous Flotch.
