First Steps

Little Miss Emily officially took her first steps the other night. I wouldn't say that she is walking, but she is definitely doing more than just surfing furniture.

Sunday night was the first time she actually let go of furniture and took a few steps to another piece of furniture. In this case, it was from the side of the coffee table to the couch (where Mama was sitting). Since, then she has become braver and braver. She is even doing a good job of walking down the hallway holding on to nothing but my index finger.

Last night, she even let go of everything and walked out into open space for about three steps before deciding she was in over her head... so she just sat down. It's just a matter of time before she is walking all over the place... God help us all!

This photo has nothing to do with walking, but I think it's cute...

Snow Day

Something pretty rare happened today... we got a dump of snow. It is absolutely beautiful, yet absolutely aggravating at the same time.

The snow was just blowing off the road as I drove to work, but it was obvious it was beginning to accumulate. Steph called me a half hour later to let me know she had dropped the kids off at Pam's, and then found out her office was closed until 10:00. She was close to the shop anyway, so she just stopped by and hung out with me for a while. By the time she got there, the roads were already getting a little slippery. Her office called a few hours later to say that they were going to stay closed all day, so she didn't need to go to work. She headed back to Pam's and watched the boys sled down the hill for a while.

While the snow is very beautiful, it is also very frustrating. We didn't even try to make any deliveries today because the Portland freeways were clogged with jackknifed trucks, spun-out SUV's, and abandoned cars. By 11:30, about the time we were considering venturing out, the Department of Transportation posted a chain requirement for all vehicles... and we don't have chains for our truck, so we just stayed put. I just hope the roads improve tomorrow... we really need to get some product delivered.

We didn't get many calls at work, as most of our customers just shut down for the day. So we went home early, too. I made it home by about 2:30, and found Steph and the kids out playing in the snow...

Noah borrowed the neighbor's sled and was having a grand time with it. He would push it up our sloped lawn and then sled down... kind of. He finally figured out that if he sledded down on the edge of the driveway, the going was much easier. I served as his 'sled lift' for the last few runs before he finally tuckered out.

I know this won't seem like much snow to our Canadian viewers, but trust me; it's enough to make a mess of things on the Portland area freeways. If they would actually plow/sand/salt the highways to a respectable degree it might be a different story... this morning's snow was quite dry and should have been easy to plow, but the sections of highway I saw pictured on the web didn't even look they had seen a single snowplow. What a mess...

Canadian Cousins

Here are a few more pics from our Canada trip...

I'm Whole Again...

Well, I guess it's time for a new entry... seeing as how Steph and the kids have been home for a week now.

Last night we had a family movie night -- it felt like the first time in forever since we had taken time to just spend time with our little family. Steph ran to the store to get Junior Mints and Red Vines, and Noah helped her make peanut butter popcorn. Then we watched Cars. It was even better than seeing it in the theater... because I could have my family snuggled up on the couch with me... :-)

Today when I got home from work, little Em was most excited to see me. She kept crawling up to me and climbing up against my legs, wanting me to hold her. I would hold her for a little bit and then set her down with some toys, only to have her crawl right back over to me. Finally I figured out that she was getting tired... and she wanted her Papa to rock her to sleep. For some reason, she really likes to snuggle into my arms when she's tired... it's one of the best feelings in the world. As Grandpa Dougie put it, "She's just like a velvet teddy bear." :-)

Well, that's about it for now. Just thought I'd post that I wasn't sad anymore now that my family is home... maybe tomorrow I will post pictures of the cousins in Canada.

I'm Back from Canada...

...but I'm sad. My family is still up there and I miss them. But at least they are getting to spend some valuable time with Steph's family.

Here's a few quick photos from the North...
