Memorial Day '07

Memorial Day Weekend '07 was about grilling and gardening for us.

Friday night started off with one of my favorite barbequed chicken recipes from Cooking for the Rushed. Then Noah and I put together some new raised beds to go on either side of the whiskey barrels.

Saturday morning was spent rounding up soil and plants for the garden, as well as a new shephards hook and hanging basket. We had a BBQ in Harrisburg to attend, so the planting of the garden would have to wait...

Sunday was cool and cloudy, but no rain. So I gave the front and back lawns a good watering.

Things finally warmed up enough today that we could have a little fun outside. We washed both vehicles and then planted the garden... and then it was time for some juicy grilled hamburgers...

Okay its been a while since Ive been here as you know. But I hav eto ask; can you really grow healthy plants in pots like that? I tried potting two tomatoe plants last year and they looked just awful and I never did get a tomato.I figured they needed more room for their roots but now I see you planting huge plants like corn and zucchinni. Have you ever really tried this? And if so how do you get it to work?

Last year we did pretty good...

The cucumber and zucchini were not in raised beds last year, but they were in this crappy clay soil (with some topsoil and compost mixed in). We figure they should do fine in the rich soil we planted them in.

The tomatoes and peppers did very good last year, except that we planted them in the same pot, and the tomato kind of shadowed the peppers. This year we put two tomatoes in one pot, and four peppers in their own pot.

The corn I'm not so sure about, but my wife is a strong willed woman... and I couldn't convince her that those beds were too small for corn... I guess we'll see about this one... :-)

Well maybe that was the trouble with my tomatoes because I jsut used the crappy clay soil from around here. Two tomatoes in one pot sounds like tempting fate! But I will be convinced if these turn out for you. Post update pics.
