Eleven Years Later

Eleven years later, the images are still etched in my mind. The loss of innocent life that day was horrible, and for that I am still sad. The day should be a memorial to firefighters and other civil servants who did their jobs until the very end, and not as fuel to feed the fire of some damn fool crusade.

On the anniversary of this tragic day in history, I will let the Bible express my views on some of the lingering vengeful sentiments that still pervade popular social media:

The words of Jesus Christ in the Sermon on the Mount:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. -Matthew 5:43-48

And from the apostle Paul:
Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 3:14-15

If we follow Christ's commandments in the Sermon on the Mount, we may find that those in foreign lands will no longer wish to commit violent acts against us. If you are still asking yourself, eleven years later, why anyone would do this to our noble and peace-loving nation, then maybe you need to re-examine the American lifestyle, and the unattainable dream that seems to be someone else's fantasy. How does that dream compare to Paul's dream in Philippians?

It is time to press on America... let's press on towards a goal that Christ Jesus would deem worthy.
