Painting the House

Most of Labor Day Weekend 2005 was spent painting the south side of the house (that would be the side with the new siding). It was slow going at first, as I had to climb extension ladders to scrub and then paint the gable end rafter (barge rafter or rake board). The new siding was still very clean, with just a few spots that needed buffing.

At one point Saturday afternoon, the neighbor boy asked, "Why are you painting your house purple?". Purple??? It's supposed to be mocha/gray! I stepped back to assess the situation and ascertained that next to the primer on the siding, the new paint did indeed have a purple-ish hue to it. But if you blocked out the primer, it looked gray... pretty strange. Well, all the primer is now gone, and it is taking on the mocha/gray tone that we were looking for...

I was hoping to finish the second coat today, but we must have had less cloud cover than on the previous days. By the time I got down to about the 8 ft. level (about 1:30), that side of the house was so warm that I could only go about two feet at a time without the paint drying up while I brushed it... not good. So, I put Noah's new bed together instead.

Jeremy may not like painting, but I do. It is one of those home improvement things that I don't feel like I'm guessing at what it is I'm doing. Even with tile setting; I am good at it, but because I learned how to do it from reading a book (which is true of almost all of the home improvement stuff I do), I am not ever really sure that I am doing it completely properly.

Not so with painting. With a brush I am king!

It looks good!

Yeah, painting really doesn't seem like too bad of a job... well, except for the stuff on the extension ladders... but there are plenty of other worse jobs I can think of.

I must not mind painting too much, because everyone keeps telling me I should be spraying my house, but I just don't see the need for it. I'm sure the actual painting would go faster, but all the prep work would drive me nuts.

I was only able to get outside for about an hour last night, so the second coat isn't quite finished yet. I'm hoping to get to it tonight... well see.
