Big Cats Like Boxes, Too!

Maybe we should use this method to test the durability of the corrugated boxes that we manufacture at Custom Box Service... ;-)

What I Really Do Meme

These things are all over the place on Facebook, so I had to make one, too...

Operation Drop Test

Which packaging option will protect a gallon jug of water in an 8-foot drop test? A single corrugated box? Double boxed with corrugated air-cell corners, polystyrene foam corners, or polyethylene foam corners? Will they all fail? Stay tuned to find out...

We Are In

We still have a few more things left to do before we pass our final inspection, but we are now officially in the new office...

I photoshopped out the temporary office.

Now it's time for some landscaping...

Delivered

Progress thru Wednesday afternoon. They will be back Friday to finish up.

Look at what showed up today...

The Modern Building Systems crew showed up bright and early this morning, bringing our new office with them. They had both halves in place in short order, and spent the rest of the day setting up the foundation. I'll post new photos tomorrow once a little more gets done.

Custom Box Service, Inc.

As the world changes the way it searches for local products and services, businesses must find new ways to advertise. At work we are looking for ways to cut costs, and have decided to cut back our yellow page print ads considerably and concentrate on internet advertising. So here is my plug for Custom Box Service, Inc.:

If you need small run, plain, corrugated boxes in the Portland area, look no further than Custom Box Service. We pride ourselves on providing top notch customer service and quick turn-around on quotes and orders.

Hiring a Truck Driver

We are hiring a new truck driver at work. We had our craigslist add up for 4 hours and took it down because we couldn't keep up. Now it's interviews all day and my mind is mush. Maybe I'll do a real post about our beach trip last week... maybe I'll get to it this weekend or something...

Fully Operational

Our new machine is now fully operational, and we are learning new tricks all the time. Efficiency is improving every day and it looks like it will be a perfect fit for our operation. Now if we can just stay busy like we are now, that would be even better!

New Toy

Rite-Size BMC-55 Box Maker (Click to enlarge)

We got a new toy at the box factory -- a used BMC-55 Rite-Size Box Maker. We hope it will increase efficiency considerably on many of the items we run. It has all new wear parts, electrical, and hydraulic hoses, and the Rite-Size technician is out in the shop installing it as we speak.

It's kind of scary entering a new realm of box making machinery, but based on the level of service we have received so far from Rite-Size, I'm confident their after-purchase support will be excellent as well. This is the first piece of machinery in the shop that has not been home-built. It was, however, built at approximately the same time as all of our other equipment, so it should fit in quite nicely.

Element

One of my first tasks associated with the hiring of the new sales/customer service rep. was to find a new company car. We needed something that could haul samples and small order runs, would be maneuverable around town, and get better gas mileage than our Chevy van. Well, after a week of online research and real-life test driving, I think I have found the perfect little 'box' for our needs... the Honda Element.

Since I picked it up on Thursday, we've been putting it through its paces to make sure it doesn't have any bugs or factory defects. It has already hauled a few large samples and made a Costco run for the business; hauled my tools, a 6' step-ladder, an 8' step-ladder, and Noah (all at the same time) on Saturday; and it even made an Ikea run with Steph on Sunday.

This thing is so incredibly versatile that I was tempted to go trade my pickup in on one! But then I remembered that we need a 6-seater for when Doug & Sandy come down, and it's Steph's turn to get a new vehicle, not mine -- and it actually isn't even her turn until my pickup is paid off!

Here is a PhotoShop rendition of the logo, etc. that we want to put on it (thank you Tony!)...

So there you have it. A box to sell boxes in. Perfect. :-)

Optimistic...

I'm starting to feel optimistic about the coming year...

Sure, there are going to be a lot of changes at the box factory, and some of them may not come easy; but I'm starting to feel optimistic about where we are headed. It will take some work and determination to make everything come together, but I'm confident that we can make it happen.

It's kind of sad to think that, by the end of the year, there will only be two Mr. Roth's here at the box factory -- but I realize that my brothers have other dreams and aspirations... and so Nick and I will trudge on without them, and with the help of the Good Lord above, hopefully we can do great things with the business. I'm optimistic that we will.
