EthelRed

Ha! That New Yorker is always spot-on!

Have you been at cocktail parties lately and felt left out of a richly innuendoed conversation about Joel and Aimee? Perhaps the banter might have contained phrases like “Not even a twinkle in his eye when you saw him last …” or “Wow! Look at her devour those canapés like she’s eating for two!”

Well, dear reader, you need not wait any longer for clarification: We’re thrilled to announce that we’re having a baby!

Yup, that’s right! Instead of trying our hand at Shakespeare or traveling abroad, we’ve decided that our sophomore school year project will be pregnancy, labor, delivery, and welcoming a new person into our lives.

We’ve bestowed the carefully-clever antepartum name EthelRed on our unborn son or daughter for the duration of their uterine stay in remembrance of Ethelred II of Britian (978-1016) who was nicknamed Ethelred the Unready when he succeeded the throne at the tender age of ten. Our EthelRed is so dubbed simply because he or she is EthelRed the Not-Yet-Ready (a subtle, but important distinction). Of course, when EthelRed is ready, our baby will shed it's in-utero name in favor of a new, more traditional birth name.

With the overgrown, haunted woods of the first trimester behind us, we’re presently enjoying the relative sunshine (and Vitamin D) of the second trimester. Aimee is feeling happy and healthy as her body shifts and adjusts daily in new and dramatic ways. Joel is prone to sudden grins and wriggles and often finds himself hugging people with slight provocation.

Ah, yes! Popular questions? Here are some responses …

EthelRed is due in mid-March (right around Spring Break, the Ides of March, and St. Patrick’s Day).

We’re planning to deliver EthelRed at the hospital in Vermillion … Why? The hospital is less than two miles from home, and there are Jacuzzis in the Birthing Suite, of course.

Yes!

We will most likely find out EthelRed’s sex (if possible) by ultrasound around the end of November.

Never!

Although we keep telling Nine about the baby, she adamantly believes that we’re bluffing and that nothing about her life will change in March.

Hmmm … We’ll have to think about that one.

We’re working with our professors to formulate a plan for both Joel and Aimee to complete their academic requirements for this year, have a baby, and take some time off to recover and care for said EthelRed. We’re still in negotiations, so we cannot divulge much more than that at this time.

Well, here's an official online congratulations on EthelRed's new status in the online world. I toast you both with a bowl of Marshmallow Mateys (the generic brand of Lucky Charms).

Awwwhhhh...

Welcome to the wonderful world of parenthood! Pick up a copy of Dr. Sears - the Baby Book. Excellent reading...

Aimee, I remember the day you were born and the day you came home from the hospital. A life changing moment for all of us...

I hope the weeks and months ahead are ache free and sleep rich.

Lots of love to both of you.

Congratulations! You are in for the most incredible ride of your life (no, it will never be the same once EthelRed is born, it will be BETTER!) Enjoy these months of sleep and relative tranquility.

i'm still incredibly excited for you guys... wooo! mirons!

isn't it funny how everyone says something like, "enjoy the sleep now..." which definitely implies the ending that goes something like "...while you can." I'm not going to say that because it might be perceived (it was by us) as a negative thing to say about one of the most positive experiences possible. Nor am I going to dole out unsolicited advice on being a parent to you two, or on being a father to Joel. If you want it, ask and I'll be sure to impart whatever wisdom I can. I am going to say congratulations and we love and miss you and can't wait to see you and meet Ethelred.

Can't you guys think of anything more original than EthelRed?:)

Congrats

If Nine needs a kid-free zone, she is welcome to our guest room.
Hiss! Hiss!
Uh-- nevermind, Toto rescinds the offer.

Anyway, best of health and luck to all three involved. Kris

Again, congrats. You will be outstanding parents. Outstanding. I look forward to seeing you before March... and after. :)

I wondered when the news would make it to the weblog. I am very excited for you guys! I have so enjoyed watching you two interact with our children. Oh, you are going to have so much fun with the imaginary play! Emma and Harrison play a combined Star Wars, in the land of Narnia, ruled by King Arthur, threatened by evil pirates.

Wish I could give you both big hugs. Congratulations!

Congratulations, you crazy kids.
