Cracks
Our flat here in Vermillion has always been a little askew. Our kitchen floor lists toward the window, the hardwood in the bedroom has a distinctive, curvaceous bow, and if you glance at the chandelier in the living room, you’ll get a sinking feeling that you may be developing sea legs as the room appears to sway and bend.
In short, our home, HMS Snug-as-a-Bug, has been slowly sinking into the earth for the past eighty years.
This week our landlord and a handyman chum have been busy little gnomes, tunneling and digging and strutting under our feet, resurfacing only for food and rest when the sun sinks below the horizon. Akin to the rats of NIMH, the goal of their efforts has been to stabilize our sinking home.
Today, they seemed to make brilliant progress on the project with especially thunderous banging that caused some signs of our home’s touch-and-go state.

Fear not, Dear Readers, we have renter's insurance.

I was trying to picture this as I was reading and I pictured these two mole-like people with hard-hats (the ones with the light on the front) digging a tunnel under your house. That looks like a pretty substantial crack! Is the second floor of the house going to fall on top of you guys? Or are you, one day, just going to sink into the ground like quicksand? Maybe that's why they're digging the tunnel! So when you do sink, you'll still be able to get out and go to class!

They certainly got more mole-like as the work went on, though regretfully they never found it necessary to wear those miner helmets.
Our upstairs neighbors suffered similar structural damage, and for an afternoon ominous cracking noises emanated from the walls and ceiling, but it appears we are out of danger.
Hmm, so if we do sink into the earth, we can someday tell EthelRed, "When we were kids, we had to walk to school in the dead of winter through a tunnel!"

Man, I miss you guys. We were at Mac & Pam's house for a Chinese New Year celebration and we had a great time, but you guys made the conversation plenty, and always with the same sentiment: "I sure wish Joel and Aimee were here!" By the way, I;m open to getting lots of shit done any time you're up for it Joel!!
