AM Beatbox

Boom-whika-whika-whika-Za

This morning, we have captured an elusive scene: Joel skooling Adelaide in the Art of Beatboxing. These two enjoy a rare, early morning human orchestration session on the living room floor before Joel heads off to his final orientation day in Yankton.

What's beatboxing?

Ah, good question.

Beatboxing is making sounds and rhythms using your mouth as your instrument. It's used frequently in hip hop and rap music, and might resemble scat singing as beatboxers will string together a sort of nonsense verbal percussion, keeping the beat of the song or adding to the melody.

When I was in middle school, a lot of my male classmates used beatboxing as a sort of personal soundtrack as they walked from class to class or rode the bus home. So, when Joel beatboxes, I find it oddly comforting and familiar, in a sort of geeky, thirteen-year-old kinda way.
